Abstract

Suppressing the pandemic is not only dependent on the discovery of a vaccine or medicine but also the awareness of each person on how to prevent it. Language is the unique bridge to pass and communicate important information to the people. It is important that the language used to express on television, radio, infographics and social media is understood by most of our country. This research aims to determine the factor that affects the understanding of pandemic terminology in the English language and its implications for understanding. Descriptive and quantitative methods were used. A questionnaire instrument was used as the main instrument to collect data on 100 respondents from Brgy. Pantoc Aliaga, Nueva Ecija. The results of the study showed that the age and level of education of the respondents are related to the level of their understanding of epidemiological terminology in the English language. Also, the frequency heard on the radio, seen on television and read in infographics/social media is also related to the level of understanding of the respondents. The study also revealed that the terminologies that are not well understood by the respondents are highly technical words, so it is appropriate to explain the meaning and concept in the Filipino language.
