Topical Structure Analysis on Essays of Elementary Learners

Philippines
Abstract

This study examines the topical progressions present on the essays written by the pupils from urban and rural areas. It also investigates the common type of progression used by the two groups of respondents and further tends to find out if there is significant difference in their essays. A cross-sectional quantitative design was utilized to the thirty (15 each group) essays of the two groups of Grade 6 pupils. The essays were analysed following Lautamatti’s (1987) TSA. The three types of progression were present in the essays of both groups of respondents. Sequential progression was the common type of progression used in the essays. The data were treated using Nonparametric tests procedure specifically Mann-Whitney test to find out the significant difference of the essays of the two groups of respondents and found out no significant difference on the essays of the two groups of respondents except on the extended parallel progression.
