Biochar (charcoal) could play an important role in reducing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide as well as helping Welsh farmers deliver wider social, environmental, and economic outcomes. Via a mixed-method approach, this Ph.D. will examine the status of research into the production and use of biochar, the feasibility of using it to combat climate change, and any unintended consequences that may result. The work will establish the extent, quality, and robustness of the current evidence base on the environmental impacts of biochar application. Having developed an understanding of the short-term and longer-term risks of widespread biochar adoption, the student will consider policy responses to these risks and suggest policy framework recommendations. They will then map the extent of existing biochar practitioners and other stakeholders in Wales through the creation of a Biochar Knowledge Exchange Network (BKEN) and an associated competency group and determine the factors affecting the adoption of biochar practices at the local, farm level.
